About GridWorlds
GridWorlds started as a technology experiment. In early 2006 I was exploring Ruby on Rails and I came up with a not-so-original idea: I can make an online game! Nobody has done that before, right? ;-) I thought it would be a good way to have some fun while learning about Rails and Ajax.
My goal was to create a fun, interactive, real-time game system that runs in a Web browser. I also wanted it to be a 100% pure browser-based game -- no Flash, no Java applets, no downloads -- just straight XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I figured it would be a good experiment and a way to demonstrate what can be done with nothing more than standards-compliant code.
Next I had to decide what kind of game to make. I have always loved retro computer role-playing games, especially 2D tile-based games like Ultima and Rogue. I also loved the classic Apple II and C-64 game Adventure Construction Set, which let players create games and share them their friends.
From those ideas GridWorlds was born, and developing it has become an all-consuming, spare-time passion. I hope you enjoy playing and building worlds.
(That's me.)
